How to Prepare for Your First Open Water Course

Starting your Open Water Diver course is one of the most exciting steps you can take as a new diver. A little preparation goes a long way.

Get Comfortable in the Water

Before your first pool session, spend some time swimming laps or floating. You don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer — just comfortable enough to relax.

Read the Theory Material Early

Most agencies provide materials before the course starts. Understanding basic dive physics, hand signals, and equipment names beforehand means you can focus on practical skills during training.

Choose the Right Gear Fit

Make sure your mask fits properly — it should seal without the strap. A leaking mask is the number one distraction for new divers.

Sleep Well and Stay Hydrated

Diving is physically and mentally demanding. Get a full night’s sleep, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol the night before.
